It all started over sixty years ago with PJ Villani (EM2c). Young Pasquale was assigned to the USS Drum, after combat duty on the USS Torsk SS-423 during World War 2. Villani was ordered aboard the USS Drum SS-228, bound for the separation center at Lido Beach for discharge from the “Silent Service”. His sons Robert Villani & Ralph Villani (EM3c) were so moved by their father’s stories about the “silent service”, Ralph would later join forces with screenplay writer Lynanne Rockhill and help in creating a movie called “USS Seaviper”. The production crew for “USS Seaviper” would then make several trips to the Drum in Mobile, AL for pre-production. After a couple of treks to the USS Drum it became very obvious. Our team needed to attempt to tell the story of the men who fought & lived on the boat. “The Untold Story” (working title) about the USS Drum SS-228 and the men who manned her battle-stations will take a look at true heroes in an era when heroes have been re-defined. And so...the production team met with Bill Tunnel, Director of Battleship Memorial Park and was given clearance to film on the USS Drum. After being introduced to Lesley Waters (C.O.B.) and Tom Bowser (MM1 (SS) ’64-’74) “The Untold Story” a documentary about the USS Drum SS-228 and the feature film “USS Seaviper” was underway and finally had a home after 2 lifetimes. “The Untold Story” will feature never before seen interviews with 10 veterans from the USS Drum SS-228. Some of these men have already gone on “Eternal Patrol” since their thoughts were captured. We’ll talk to their families and explore the boat and her missions in depth. We won’t be silent about the “USS Drum Ss-228”. Our team will do everything in our power to ensure that the vets from SS-228 and the boat get all the honor they deserve. Additionally, partial proceeds from the documentary will go towards the restoration fund for the USS Drum SS-228. If all goes according to plan, the documentary should surface sometime in 2010. USS Seaviper the movie. USS Seaviper is a full length feature film. As far as we know it is the first film whose submarine components are being entirely filmed aboard an actual World War 2 Diesel Submarine since the mid 1950‘s. The story is about a World War 2 U.S. diesel submarine that discovers uranium on an island occupied by Japanese and German soldiers in the south Pacific, while the Navigational Officer and Chief of the Boat struggle for power, and USS Seaviper is hunted and depth charged by a Japanese destroyer. Axis powers are making the bomb and the officers aboard USS Seaviper are the only ones who know. Will they make it out in time?
